This book presents an empirical study of oral feedback practices in doctoral supervision meetings, offering a new understanding of the social organization of doctoral research supervision. Based on 25 video-recorded supervision meetings at an Australian university, the study provides direct insights into the interactions between doctoral students and their supervisors. Utilizing conversation analysis as an analytical framework, the book explores how feedback is initiated and delivered, how supervisors manage disagreements, and how they acknowledge student autonomy and expertise. It also examines how supervisors collaborate within a team supervision environment. This work is valuable for doctoral supervisors, postgraduate students, and researchers interested in conversation analysis and education, as well as those focused on feedback and advice in professional settings.
