This book analyzes how colonial Mexico’s silver production and fiscal mechanisms became central to the Spanish Empire’s finances during a period of intense military conflict (1760–1810). Marichal argues that New Spain (Mexico) acted as a “fiscal submetropolis,” funding successive wars against Britain and France via taxes, loans, and remittances, ultimately contributing to the financial collapse of the Spanish monarchy.
