This book — originally the PhD thesis of Giovanna Miritello — investigates how large social networks evolve over time by studying the temporal patterns of human communication. Using anonymized, large-scale datasets of telephone call records, the work analyzes how changes in timing, frequency, and structure of interactions affect social-network dynamics, such as link persistence, decay, and information spreading. The findings demonstrate that temporal aspects of communication significantly shape network behavior, challenging traditional static views of social networks and offering new insights relevant for modeling information diffusion, group formation, and other social processes.
