This book takes an anthropological approach to examine how Qur’anic schools function as institutions of both preservation and change. It draws on fieldwork from Morocco, Yemen, and Nigeria to show how these schools have historically preserved religious, social and cultural traditions through Qur’anic memorization, while also adapting over time — for instance through gender inclusion, shifts in pedagogy, and the influence of public-school models.
