A pioneering comparative economic history that examines the activities and economic significance of Indian mercantile communities trading across Iran, Central Asia, and Russia between 1600 and 1750. Using largely overlooked Russian archival sources, Dale shows these merchants as part of a hegemonic Indian trade diaspora, challenging Eurocentric interpretations of early modern world economic history and offering unique insights into the vitality of Indian mercantile capitalism and the social dynamics of expatriate trading communities such as those in Astrakhan.
