A unique firsthand account and collection of writings by trader Will Evans, who operated the Shiprock Trading Company in the Four Corners region and recorded his observations of Navajo life, culture, and historic events such as the Long Walk. Compiled and edited posthumously by Susan E. Woods and historian Robert S. McPherson, the book combines Evans’s narrative vignettes, personal stories from Navajo acquaintances, and rich descriptions of daily life, trading post operations, and intercultural exchanges. It provides a rare outsider‑insider perspective on Navajo history and social life in the first half of the 20th century, reflecting both the deep friendships and the cultural lens of its author.
