A critical examination of contemporary social democracy and its prospects for the twenty-first century. Fitzpatrick assesses the New Social Democracy model—especially as associated with Third Way politics—arguing that its blend of market-oriented reforms and social justice goals has lacked transformative direction. Drawing on egalitarian, feminist, and environmental ideas, the book explores welfare state reform, justice and citizenship, the role of the state, democracy, future generations, new technologies, and more. It proposes ways to renew social democratic thought and practice by challenging conservative dominance and imagining welfare models that are more inclusive, deliberative, and attuned to emerging social needs.
