This book analyzes how the Tehran Bazaar — a central institution in Iran’s economy and urban life — has navigated changing political regimes from the Pahlavi monarchy to the Islamic Republic. Drawing on field research and historical data, Keshavarzian shows that while the bazaar maintained autonomy and political influence under the Shah’s modernization drive, the Islamic Republic’s policies inadvertently transformed its organization, reducing its capacity for collective mobilization. The work offers deep insights into state–society relations, economic networks, and how markets shape and are shaped by political change.
