This book examines how youth activism emerges and operates in U.S. urban contexts, comparing a mostly white, middle-class youth network in Portland, Oregon, with a working-class, minority youth network in Oakland, California. Through detailed ethnographic study, the author explores how young activists challenge social inequalities across age, class, race, and gender — engaging around issues such as education reform, war, environmental justice, and incarceration — and how they navigate power structures to build political influence and community change.
