This book explores how metaphors shape scientific discourse and influence the creation and communication of scientific knowledge. Using examples from complexity science at the Santa Fe Institute, the author shows how metaphorical language helps scientists conceptualize abstract scientific ideas — but also poses challenges, since metaphors may mislead or impose unintended connotations. The work examines the tension between rhetorical clarity and scientific precision and argues for careful awareness of how language, imagery, and metaphor affect scientific writing and understanding.
