This detailed study examines rural reform in China following the ascension of Deng Xiaoping in 1978. The book focuses on major changes that transitioned the agricultural sector from a centrally planned system to a more market-oriented one, including the replacement of collective teams with household farming, the increase of free markets for rural products, higher state prices for agricultural products, and greater freedom to expand off-farm activities. Uniquely, it centers on a single township, Dahe in Hebei Province, providing new data on the effects of reform at the village level.
