The Crucible is the memoir of Yay Panlilio, a Filipina-Irish American journalist who became a leader in the Philippine resistance against Japanese occupation during World War II. Originally written in 1950, this autobiography details her experiences as a journalist, triple agent, guerrilla leader, and her relationship with guerrilla general Marcos V. Augustin. The narrative traverses from the streets of Japanese-occupied Manila to the battlegrounds in the countryside and later to the farmlands of central California. Panlilio combines sharp commentary, detailed journalistic accounts, and elements of romance, offering a unique perspective on the war and its aftermath. This edition includes an introduction by Denise Cruz, providing biographical, historical, and cultural contexts that enrich the understanding of Panlilio's story.
