This report assesses how environmental information — such as oceanographic, meteorological, and geophysical (METOC) data — can support naval operations and warfare. It reviews the existing environmental-information systems used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, identifies the limits and uncertainties inherent in environmental data, and recommends improvements to information collection, uncertainty reduction, and information-flow processes. The study argues that improved environmental awareness can provide tactical advantages and enhance decision-making in naval operations.
